What is cassava, how did it come about? 10/09/2024 3:12pm (UTC)

Cassava which is also known as (Manihot Esculenta Crantz “2n=36”) belongs to the family of Euphorbiaceae and is a staple food for some 200 million people in Africa.

It is also called manioc. It originated from the Central and South America (Western and Southern Mexico, and part of Guatemala and Brazil). It came into West Africa in the 16th century through the Portuguese.
It was not of any value then, not until around the 19th century when it spread through the West Africa sub-regions in the 20th century. It gets to the north of the Niger around 1914 till date; it still remains a valued crop there.
Cassava is a major source of nutritional food for those considered “low income earners” in many parts of the tropical Africa. Cassava is the most staple food crops. No wonder it has been fittingly described as the staff of life; which can also mean Manioc or Tapioca.
